Those wishing to take out citizenship in Switzerland will face tougher requirements from January 2018. The new federal law on nationality is among a number of legal revisions to come into effect with the new year. In future only those immigrants who have a C residence permit will be eligible to apply. Stricter language requirements will also come into effect: candidates will have to demonstrate their ability in a Swiss national language in a written test. Until now there has been no consistency in language testing, with many cantons in the French-language region making a judgment based on the candidate’s oral skills. “Candidates’ linguistic abilities were evaluated at an interview with the commune or cantonal naturalization committee,” said Christophe Maillard, head of the canton of Fribou...

When thinking about the mass extermination camps of a holocaust think.. The key to freedom is to be able to have the ability to defend yourself &, if you dont have the tools to do that, then youre going to be at the mercy of whomever wants to put you away. Guns are deeply rooted within Swiss culture - but the gun crime rate is so low that statistics are not even kept. The country has a population of six million, but there are estimated to be at least two million publicly-owned firearms, including about 600,000 automatic rifles and 500,000 pistols. This is in a very large part due to Switzerland's unique system of national defence, developed over the centuries. Instead of a standing, full-time army, the country requires every man to undergo some form of military training for a few days or weeks a year throughout most of their lives. Between the ages of 21 and 32 men serve as frontline troops. They are given an M-57 assault rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition which they are required to keep at home. Once discharged, men serve in the Swiss equivalent of the US National Guard, but still have to train occasionally and are given bolt rifles. Women do not have to own firearms, but are encouraged to. Update 28th December 2010: Out of nearly 3 million views of this video there are 4358 thumbs up to 427 thumbs down. So, you could say, if any of us lived in any sort of real democracy in this world that would mean that only one in every ten people would like to keep gun control laws. Guess this means that we're not and that the tyrants still have all the real power. Data storage facilities are growing faster in Switzerland than in any other European country. Apart from having mountain bunkers in which to squirrel away servers, the country’s strict data protection law is also proving a draw for global business. (SRF/swissinfo.ch) During the Second World War, Switzerland bored a vast network of bunkers and tunnels into its mountains as part of the country’s defensive strategy. These underground fortresses are now making a 21st century, digital age, comeback. The high security storage company, Mount 10, has bought a former air force bunker to store data. The place is protected by heavy doors, long tunnels and additional security like retina and fingerprint scanners. Customer data from about 30 countries is stored in the servers, which can run for several days on generators in case of a power outage. The computers are cooled by underground pools of water. The main threat is, however, from hackers. Switzerland has become a global refuge for digital data. Its legal security is one major selling point. After the Snowden affair, Phil Zimmermann - inventor of the email data encryption system PGP and one of the world’s leading experts on data security - transferred his business to Geneva. He had witnessed how other companies were forced to hand out customer data and even encryption codes to the United States authorities. --- swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). Before Swiss women had the right to vote, L permits were created in 1975 and allow women from countries that do not have a free labor accord with Switzerland to work as "dancers". In 1991 following a decision by the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, Appenzell became the last Swiss canton to grant women the vote. Teenage girls in Switzerland are increasingly turning to prostitution to be able to afford expensive designer goods, according to media reports. The Swiss Child Protection Association has called for the age of consent in Switzerland to be raised from 16 to 18 in the case of prostitutes. It warned that because the legal age for prostitution in neighboring Germany was 21 and in France and Italy 18, Switzerland risked becoming a "paradise for tourists seeking te e n age s e x". Pros ti tu tion is legal in Switzerland. The age of consent is 16. "There is nothing in the Swiss criminal code on pros ti tu tion. There are various sub-clauses – pimping is banned for example – but pros ti tu tion itself is not. Regarding sexual abuse on the other hand, the criminal code contains a whole list of offences." If you are 15, you can't become a prostitute because of the general age of consent, not because of any prostitution law. S e x with people over 16 is legal – paying them doesn't change anything. "Embarrassing" "The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography – both ratified by Switzerland – foresee the protection of children against s e x ual exploitation until the age of 18," the association's Karolina Frischkopf told swissinfo. "The problem is that [Swiss] law does not mention the situation where [16- or 17-year-olds] voluntarily pros ti tu te themselves. All other situations are covered by current law. It's a question of closing a legal gap." Other organisations are annoyed that such a state of affairs is possible in a country that has worked hard for children's rights for years. "For Switzerland this is simply embarrassing," said Susanne Seytter from Fiz, a women's rights organisation in Zurich. Government view For the justice ministry what counts is the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against S e x ual Exploitation and S e x ual Abuse, which the government is still deciding whether to sign and ratify. This was adopted and opened for signature at the 28th Conference of European Ministers of Justice in July 2007 in Lanzarote, Spain. "This convention deals among other things with the issue of penalising those who use the services of 16- or 17-year-old prostitutes," justice ministry spokesman Folco Galli told swissinfo. However, the convention has still to go through a consultation procedure, an analysis of the consultation procedure, the cabinet's final draft to parliament, then through parliament... In what has become known as "label sex", more and more teenage girls in Switzerland are turning to part-time prostitution as a source of "pocket money" for designer dresses or expensive accessories. Girls advertise online or visit upmarket clubs. One Zurich nightclub even organised a theme event – including 16-year-old guests. The legal age for prostitution in Germany is 21, in France and Italy 18.

“Candidates’ linguistic abilities were evaluated at an interview with the commune or cantonal naturalization committee,” said Christophe Maillard, head of the canton of Fribourg naturalization service in comments quoted by Le Matin. The new law formalizes the language requirement, with candidates having to demonstrate A2 level writing ability and B1 spoken skills under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The cantons can raise the barrier even higher if they wish. The Thurgau cantonal government decided in November that its applicants for citizenship must have B2 level speaking ability. The language tests will take place in accredited language schools, Le Matin said, and cost the applicant a maximum of 250 francs. Candidates whose mother tongue is a Swiss national language or who have studied for at least five years in one of these languages will not be required to undergo the test. Another change affects social welfare.Until now applicants in receipt of welfare benefits were excluded from applying for citizenship. From January this will be extended to include those in receipt of social welfare in the three years prior to their application. An exception is made if the benefits are paid back in full.In one important respect the application process is being eased, with candidates only having to have been resident in Switzerland for 10 years instead of the current 12.
